Overview
Everyday banking disputes — arbitrary charges, accounts frozen without explanation, failed NEFT/UPI stuck for weeks, loan closure certificates withheld, mis-sold insurance bundled into loans, fixed deposits closed on forged instructions — have a defined escalation ladder that actually works when used precisely: written complaint to the bank (30 days to respond), then the RBI's Integrated Ombudsman via the CMS portal, whose awards up to ₹20 lakh bind the bank. The pattern we fix most: customers who called and argued for months but never created the written record the Ombudsman route needs.
Key Provisions — RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021
- The Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2021 covers banks, NBFCs, and payment providers under one window (cms.rbi.org.in).
- File with the Ombudsman after the bank rejects or 30 days of silence; within one year of the reply (or 1 year + 30 days of the complaint).
- Awards up to ₹20 lakh plus up to ₹1 lakh for time, harassment and mental anguish; banks rarely appeal small awards.
- Frozen accounts: banks must state the basis (LEA instruction, KYC, suspicion) — indefinite unexplained freezes are challengeable, ultimately by writ.
What You Can Get
How We Handle It
Written Complaint
The complaint reframed in writing, with the record the escalation will need.
Bank's 30 Days
The bank's response window — many matters resolve under a precise complaint.
Ombudsman Filing
CMS-portal complaint with documents; we handle the conciliation exchange.
Award / Writ
Ombudsman award enforced — High Court writ for freezes the scheme can't reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
My account was frozen because of one credit from a fraud-tainted account — my whole balance is stuck.
This 'lien on full balance for a small tainted credit' pattern is widespread and challengeable: representation to the bank and cyber cell, then a writ — courts increasingly order release of the untainted balance.
Is the Ombudsman free? Do I need a lawyer?
It's free and lawyer-optional — but the complaint's framing decides it, since the Ombudsman decides on documents. That framing is what we do.
